About Us

National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) emerged in 1992, in response to the impact of the Ayodhya incident and in the midst of the globalization spree. It took a definite shape in 1996, after senior activists undertook a long national tour of 15 states, as an alliance of progressive people’s organisations and movements.

While retaining their autonomous identities, these organizations and movements work together towards the primacy of rights of communities over natural resources, conservation and governance, decentralised democratic development and a just, sustainable and egalitarian society in the true spirit of globalism. We stand against corporate globalisation, communalism and religious fundamentalism, patriarchy, casteism, untouchability and discrimination of all kinds.

We believe an alliance which has emerged through this process, with shared ideology and diverse strategies, can give rise to a strong social and political force and a national people’s movement. In this quest for a larger alliance, NAPM also reaches out to integrate various civil society organisations and individuals working towards similar goals and provides a forum for vibrant strands of ideology to come together.

In its own programmes, actions and conceptualisation of development perspectives on the emerging paradigm of sustainable development, equity, freedom, justice and peace, NAPM draws on the thought of Ambedkar, Gandhi, Marx, Lohia, Phule, Periyar and others.
